Drink Better Wine for Less!

A wine looking for a desert island!

Thursday, 16 May 2013 11:09:27 AM Australia/Sydney

It is a bit of fun asking people what wine they would choose if they were on a desert island with only wine being washed up with them. Ignoring the wallies who respond with “Chateau Petrus” (a snip at $2,000 a bottle) or “a DRC burgundy” (a touch more serious at $15,000 a bottle) our contender would be a fine old cabernet from Coonawarra. This week we have a pearler from Coonawarra, but as it is only 3 years old you may have to put off your trip to the islands for a little while!

We very quickly sold out of last weeks’ sauv. blanc from the west, so thought we had better replace it. We recently got our hands on another pallet of Norfolk Rise which is the export label for Piper’s Brook South Australian wines - at only $9 it is great value. We have also received another shipment of the beautifully smooth and soft Sensi wine made from the Primitivo grape in Puglia, Italy. Strongly recommended for those who do not like or cannot handle Australian tannins and who want to drink red.

We are always happy to do mixed cases – either select your own bottles or simply click on mixed premium red/white to order a pre-packed selection. Alternatively, if you only like, for example, shiraz and riesling, let us know and we will packed a mixed case reflecting your preferences.

Angoves Cab Sauv

Angoves Coonawarra (SA) 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon

Coonawarra is arguably the most famous wine region in Australia, and growing cabernet is what it does best. From a famous wine family (they started making wine in 1886), and a (nearly) 10 out of 10 vintage, this wine shows why Coonawarra is so highly regarded. Still young, this deeply coloured wine has a delicious aroma of blackberries with a whiff of eucalypt and coconut. It is medium bodied and very dry but the fine grained tannins are already balanced by the excellent ripe fruit. Please do try this if you have ever wondered why all the fuss over Coonawarra cabernets. However, if you can be patient, it will be, as they say, singing hymns in a few years!

It comes in 6 packs so we would suggest you consider buying one of those and hiding it away for at least 6 months (and keep it in the box as cardboard is a really good insulating material). We are so keen on sharing this wine we will happily store it for you and deliver it in time for Christmas.

Norfolk Rise Sauv Blanc

Norfolk Rise Mt Benson (SA) 2010 Sauvignon Blanc

Despite having the same owners as the famous Pipers Brook of Tasmania, this vineyard has a very low profile in Australia. Its owners, a 200 year old Belgian trading house, established this vineyard in 2000 with production targeted at Europe. However with continuing economic woes in Europe combined with the strong Aussie dollar, some is now appearing in Australia at very reasonable prices. Rated at 91 out of 100 points by James Halliday and available at a few of the big discounters at $14.45, this is great value at $9.

Light straw-gold in colour, it has a nice fresh aroma with a hint of gooseberry. It is quite light in the mouth, with fresh citrus flavours with a touch of that gooseberry - fresh, easy and delicious drinking over the next 12 months.

Buy now for $9.00 each

Sensi Puglia (Italy) 2011 Primitivo

This smooth and rich Italian wine was made from Primitivo grapes and defines what is a "fruit driven" wine. It has a lovely berry nose and in the mouth it is medium bodied with big soft, velvety fruit leading to a gently drying finish. Perfect for those who suffer from the tannin in Australian red - not complex but it is just plain delicious.

Grange's distant relative for only $9 a bottle?

Friday, 10 May 2013 2:46:53 PM Australia/Sydney

Amidst all the hype surrounding the recent release of the 2008 Grange, we thought we might ride on their coat tails a bit and offer you a distant relative of the iconic Grange for only $9 a bottle. While Grange is a hugely successful marketing story (and needs to be, as they make and have to sell over 8,000 cases of it), Penfolds source grapes for it from a number of regions and vineyards, including those owned by the Hickinbotham family.

Most people are familiar with “poor man’s Grange “(aka Bin 389) but let us now introduce you to their very distant cousin, Kari Bay shiraz. Made by the Hickinbotham family, and originally destined for Europe, this young shiraz is good, easy drinking and at only $9 a bottle, provides lots of change from $600! It may never get to sit at the same table as the illustrious Grange but rather like Italian nobility, it can claim a distant lineage! We also have a fresh and delicious young Sauv Blanc from the west as well as a bargain price on one of our biggest selling wines, the 2009 Three Score riesling. We do not have a lot of it left, but we are stocking up big time on a number of Rieslings from the outstanding 2012 vintage so are cleaning it out at only $8 a bottle.

Kari Bay Shiraz

Kari Bay Adelaide Hills (SA) 2012 Shiraz

Professor Hickinbotham was one of the founding fathers of Australian wine and the grandfather of David Hickinbotham, who made this wine. The family still own some of the best vineyards in South Australia, and the grapes they produce are good enough to have supplied fruit for Penfolds Grange. Kari Bay, their export label wine, is certainly not Grange, but it is both affordable and good drinking. Grown in what is now widely called the best vintage in a generation this smooth and uncomplicated young wine is already excellent, easy drinking. With a bit of spice and cherry on the nose, it has good balance, nice ripe fruit and a gently drying finish. A real bargain at only $9, thanks to yet another English export order being cancelled.

Peppermint Creek Sauv/B

Peppermint Creek (Manjimup, WA) 2011 Sauvignon Blanc

From a Halliday rated 5 star winery, this is yet another family owned, boutique winery that encountered serious financial problems in 2012. As a result we have another bargain. Unlike most areas in the eastern states, 2011 was a very good, verging on great, vintage year in the greater Margaret River region, particularly for whites. This export labelled wine is easy drinking and perfect for lovers of Sauv Blanc - it is a very pale straw in colour, with a bouquet of fresh lemony fruit and a hint of gooseberry. It is quite light in the mouth with clean, almost lemony fruit and a refreshing clean finish. Delicious, well priced white. Drink now to 2014.

Three Score & Ten Barossa Valley 2009 Riesling

Three Score & Ten Barossa Valley 2009 Riesling

This lovely, uncomplicated Riesling was grown at the Mt. Crawford vineyard of Domaine Day (owned by Robin Day), bordering Eden Valley. Robin Day has been growing Riesling in this area for over 30 years, including a number of years with Orlando. It is very pale and has a clean, faintly zesty nose. It is quite light in the mouth with refreshing lemon / green acid balancing out the delicious soft fruit. A very refreshing, quite dry and easy drinking wine. At less than half the price this wine sells for at the cellar door, it is a bargain, particularly at this weeks special price of only $8. However we are getting to the end of our stock. Drink now to 2014.Buy now for $8.00

There are plenty of other bargains on our website plus lots of affordable wines for that drinks party or family celebration. If you would like to order any of our wines simply log onto our website where you can also see our full range. Alternatively reply by return email with what you would like and we will invoice you. It is very easy to get it all to your door and delivery is prompt.

All the best,
