A late Christmas present from Price Waterhouse!

Happy New Year!

We hope you had (or hopefully, are still having !) a good break.

For our first newsletter of the year, we pass on a bargain we secured thanks once more to the accountants hurriedly raising cash from yet another wine industry failure. Basedow was one of the most famous names in Australian wine, being established by Johannes Basedow in 1896 while his brother Martin established the Roseworthy Agricultural College. Over the last 30 years it has changed hands numerous times, and its most recent owner collapsed last year. Thanks to PriceWaterhouseCoopers rapidly liquidating all of Basedows bottled stock, we have secured some real bargains, and this week we release the 2009 Basedows Chardonnay as our bargain of the week at only $9, compared to the $24 it used to sell for.

For no-fuss summer drinking we also have also released a smooth, easy-drinking chardonnay made by our old mate, Chris Hill, the Sheridan’s Block at only $10 a bottle. Finally, we release arguably the perfect wine for this summers’ barbeques - widely available in lots of top restaurants throughout the UK, the Heywood Vineyards 2012 shiraz is warm, rich and smooth – give it a bit of air at the barbie and this $10 special will be outstanding!

Basedow Wines Barossa Valley (SA) White Label 2009 Chardonnay $9.00

63% off RRP of $24.00!

From a very good vintage year this wine is a brilliant pale gold in colour, and shows clean and fresh aromas of stone fruit. It is lighter to medium bodied, beautifully smooth with nice soft acid overlaid with a touch of richness. This is delicious wine, and a real bargain this week at only $9 a bottle – thank you PWC!

Sheridan’s Block Kingston (SA) 2012 Chardonnay $10.00

50% off RRP of $19.99

Made by Chris Hill for a small grape grower in the Kingston area, 150 km NE of Adelaide, from a near perfect vintage year for white grapes – with minimal oak treatment, the terrific grape quality from 2012 shines through. This is one of those really easy to drink styles – smooth and supple and with lovely fresh acid balanced by lovely soft fruit. Great summer drinking, and affordable to boot!

Heywood Vineyards Padthaway (SA) 2012 Shiraz $10.00

41% off RRP of $17.00

This wine is distributed throughout the UK by Corney & Barrow (arguably one of the world’s best wine merchants) at $16 a bottle, and can be found in numerous restaurants (including Gamba, one of Glasgow’s top eateries) at around $40 so at only $10 it is indeed a real bargain. Made by Brett Duffin from an excellent vintage and an area renowned for shiraz, this wine is designed to be drunk young and it does it rather well ! Big and strong, with lovely warmth and smoothness, this is an early candidate for barbeque wine of the year!
