After the rugby, thank goodness for Margaret River!

After the rugby, thank goodness for Margaret River!

The Wallabies certainly did their best last weekend to promote the virtues of Aussie Rules. Looks like the “X Factor” should be left to Channel 10 on a Sunday night! Apart from dismantling our rugby team, the Kiwis have also dominated Australia’s white wine market with their ubiquitous sauv blancs (some of which are very good, but many are quite ordinary). About two thirds of all white drunk in Australia comes from across the ditch - bit sad really when such a small country has the wood on us with the All Blacks as well as (nearly) all the Whites!
However Margaret River in the west (and the Adelaide region to a lesser extent) produce excellent versions, particularly those blended with semillon. These really can be outstanding and in the view of a lot of wine judges, are far superior to all but the top New Zealand whites. What is particularly good news is that so many of them are so well priced and this week we release a $12 beauty from the makers of Lakes Folly, the 2011 Whispering Woods Sauv Blanc.
Pirramimma, which is aboriginal for “the moon and the stars” was first planted in 1892 by Alexander Johnson and his grandson is now in charge – from here comes a delicious young chardonnay at only $12 a bottle. Finally, and continuing the white theme, this weeks Bargain of the Week is an easy drinking Sauv Blanc from the Pipers Brook stable, grown in South Australia and priced at only $9 a bottle.

The Eagle Has Landed!

This week we release a beautiful, perfectly aged cabernet from Eagle Vale, which is located right next door to Leeuwin Estate in the Margaret River. This soft, rich and very smooth red is eight years old and really worth getting if you like cabernets from the west – it is also great value at only $24 a bottle. We also have the third and final wine we secured from the cancelled export order of Fonty’s Pool. This is the 2010 cabernet merlot which was made in a joint venture with Cape Mentelle – showing a good balance of gentle tannins overlaid with nice softness and gentle richness, this $12 wine is excellent, affordable drinking.

For those after a suitable wine for the guests who over-stay their welcome, or who want to hide their gems from the thirsty relatives, we also have a soft, easy drinking merlot from Victoria for only $8 a bottle – very useful to have on hand for those emergencies!

We can pack it to your preferences, and there is no on-going commitment or minimum period. To make it even easier, we will knock off 15% for all monthly orders for the next 3 months. It will save you heaps on those expensive, last minute purchases!

Mt Pleasant Creek Estate Heathcote (Vic) 2009 Shiraz

We have got some more of this wine that sold out in a few hours last year. From a vineyard that contributed to the famous 1997 Ducks Muck, this is an outstanding, full flavoured wine with excellent balance between ripe fruit and almost invisible, fine grained tannins. Rich, smooth and supple, this is outstanding wine. We bought well, so the price is down from $26 to only $21 – this is great value. Do read the background notes about how Ducks Muck exploded onto the scene, commanding at one stage a price of $3,500 a bottle - amazing stuff!

Brokenwood "Harlequin" 2010 Chardonnay

Buy it now for $18 a bottle

A delicious, unwooded chardonnay from one of the great names in the industry. With enough age to show all it has, this is great drinking and good value.
