Thanks to the Yanks, Helen stays at home!

The Kirby family of Village Roadshow fame have moved into wine in a big way, and their efforts were rewarded last year when their Yabby Lake pinot noir (from their main vineyard in the Mornington Peninsula) won the Jimmy Watson trophy, the first pinot ever to do so. They also own the famous Mt Helen vineyard in the Strathbogie ranges in Victoria which they bought from Tisdalls, one of the great names back twenty or so years. This week we release their 2010 Cooralook Chardonnay, but their efforts in making this gently rich, fresh and delicious wine were rewarded by the American importer cancelling a very large order. Happy days for us – (Mt) Helen stays in Australia and is now available for only $11 a bottle!

Yabby Lake also have one of the best restaurants on the peninsula though care needs to be taken with their wine list as some of the wines are “tres ordinaire” (but the pinot is magnificent).

This week we also release another delicious red from the former Rothbury estate vineyards in the Hunter Valley. It is very sad how the Hunter wines are so neglected by the market today – their semillons and their shiraz’s can be outstanding but are simply not in demand. The Sussex Ridge 2009 shiraz was grown in a superb vintage year, and this lighter bodied, smooth and softer style of red is a bargain at only $9.00.

Over the last few years we have enjoyed releasing some wonderful older wines from Chris Hill, some under his label, and some he sourced for us, and a lot were at what can only be described as silly prices. The older reds are just about gone, but this week we release his smooth and rich 2012 “Capricornia” McLaren Vale Shiraz – from a superb vintage, this is great value at only $12 a bottle and will drink very nicely over the next few years.

We also release the 2009 Oceans Estate cab-merlot – this is ready to drink and comes from a terrific vintage and perhaps the best area in Australia for this blend, the Margaret River in the west. The cabernet-merlot blend is very successful in the Margaret River, particularly in such a great vintage year as 2009. Produced by the Tomasi family in the Karridale sub region of the Margaret River wine region, this one is round and smooth with nice balance and medium weight. One way to avoid headaches - Its “Instant Cellar Time”!

Many people do not have either the patience or the space to store young wines until they reach their full potential. With the reds, it also means more likelihood of headaches from all that youthful tannin! Wines that have a bit of age on them, and particularly ones from good vintages, generally retail for a serious premium. Thus the traditional solution for those less patient people who do not have a cellar – vinous infanticide!

We can help solve this drama! We have a number of older wines from top vintages hiding in our full list and they have sufficient bottle age to show their true colours. Most importantly, we can offer them for a fraction of their current release price. These older gems include the 2006 Eagle Vale (Margaret River) Cabernet, the 2009 Mt Pleasant Creek (Heathcote) Shiraz and the 2006 Virgin Hills cabernet. From a great year and from one of the west’s premier wineries it is soft, fresh and smooth with a touch of richness and is a great bargain at only $14. We also release another smooth, soft red from Rothbury, the Hope Estate shiraz from the outstanding 2009 vintage at only $12 a bottle.

Finally we have two bargains this week, the first being the Salitage 2009 Chardonnay Verdelho. At only $8 a bottle it represents outstanding value, having lovely soft fruit, good balance and a nice clean, dry finish. After the rugby, thank goodness for Margaret River!

The Wallabies certainly did their best last weekend to promote the virtues of Aussie Rules. Looks like the “X Factor” should be left to Channel 10 on a Sunday night! Apart from dismantling our rugby team, the Kiwis have also dominated Australia’s white wine market with their ubiquitous sauv blancs (some of which are very good, but many are quite ordinary). About two thirds of all white drunk in Australia comes from across the ditch - bit sad really when such a small country has the wood on us with the All Blacks as well as (nearly) all the Whites!

However Margaret River in the west (and the Adelaide region to a lesser extent) produce excellent versions, particularly those blended with semillon. These really can be outstanding and in the view of a lot of wine judges, are far superior to all but the top New Zealand whites. What is particularly good news is that so many of them are so well priced and this week we release a $12 beauty from the makers of Lakes Folly, the 2011 Whispering Woods Sauv Blanc.

Pirramimma, which is aboriginal for “the moon and the stars” was first planted in 1892 by Alexander Johnson and his grandson is now in charge – from here comes a delicious young chardonnay at only $12 a bottle. Finally, and continuing the white theme, this weeks Bargain of the Week is an easy drinking Sauv Blanc from the Pipers Brook stable, grown in South Australia and priced at only $9 a bottle.

One of our most reliable suppliers is a big, burly guy from the Adelaide Hills who is distinguished by a huge mo, a very large bike, and a capacity for finding and blending some absolute gems – and always at excellent prices. This week we release his cabernet / shiraz blend from two of the premium regions of South Australia, with the grapes produced in one of the truly great recent vintages. David (aka "Duck") Anderson was the man whose wine, the famous "Ducks Muck", exploded onto the world stage when single bottles of his wine were selling for thousands of dollars in America. In 1994, shortly before this sky-rocket took off, Duck helped a friend plant a new vineyard at Heathcote called Mt Pleasant Creek Estate. The grapes were so good that some of them were used in the famous 1997 Ducks Muck. Duck Anderson now owns this vineyard and is on record of saying "essentially a dry-land vineyard, it produces stunning fruit". It is most famous for its shiraz, but its cabernet is simply wonderful and this week we release the smooth, aromatic and softly dry 2009 cabernet sauvignon / cabernet sauvignon blend. Strongly recommended.

It really is an interesting space, this wine game! A recent study stated that in the Australian market 77 per cent of wine sales are through two outlets (Coles and Woolworth’s and their various subsidiaries), and that “Australians generally pay more for Australian wine than British consumers do”. Says quite a lot about so-called competition, but it is a great result when the Brits cancel their orders and we can then offer bargains back in Oz outside of the big grocery chains! One of these is todays Bargain of the Week being an $8 shiraz from the former Rothbury Estate in the Hunter that was bottled for Aldi Supermarkets in Ireland.

At the same time, however, this study noted that Americans can be “reverse price sensitive”, i.e. it seems that in the U.S. there is suspicion of wines that are seen to be too cheap. This seems to be one of the reasons why so much Penfolds wines are now being shipped home from North America – thus our Penfolds release of a few weeks ago (sadly sold out) plus the Rosemount magnums which we still have available at a pretty remarkable $22 a bottle. These were designed and labelled for the American market and are great drinking – they certainly make a statement when placed on the dinner table! It is a similar story with the Hickinbotham 2012 Finniss River shiraz, sent back from the USA and now for sale here at a bargain $10 a bottle.

Another interesting comment came from the former boss of Virgin Wines, which in England was a fairly spectacular failure. When asked what lessons he had learned, he replied that “no one gives a damn about brands in the wine business. What people are looking for is off-the-beaten-track, undiscovered wines.” This possibly explains why the unheralded Monowai is one of our best sellers – off the beaten track, family run, and making delicious, affordable wines. Earlier this week we released their 2013 Sauvignon Blanc and at $13 a bottle it really is worth trying as is their 2013 Pinot Gris at only $12 a bottle.

Back to school – Cellaring 101!

Hello ,

We get a lot of questions about how to handle wine, and they mostly concern how to cellar it and how long to keep it. It really is worth knowing a few key facts about this subject, as there are few things more irritating (and even embarrassing) than presenting a prized bottle to expectant guests (particularly if you have raised expectations!) and finding it a bit of a disaster. We thought we might share some hard won experience with you. However cellaring wine is academic most of the time – it is a pretty amazing fact that in Australia the average time from purchase to consumption of every bottle sold is a lofty 20 minutes!

This week we release a lovely young Coonawarra cabernet from the outstanding 2012 vintage – Angoves are a famous, family owned winery and this, their top of the line red, is rich and smooth with lovely drying tannins – it is drinking well now but do try and keep it (after reading these cellaring tips!) for say 6 months before getting into it. We also release a delicious riesling from the Clare Valley, grown in perhaps the best vintage in that area for a generation – 2012.

Joining our $10 Fonty’s Pool merlot as our “Bargain of the Week” we have another special from the famous Salitage winery – for only $8 a bottle you can indulge in the 2009 Chardonnay Verdelho - from a great vintage, it is soft, delicious, and easy drinking with a nice, clean finish.

Storing Wine

If you are able to hang onto your wine for more than 20 minutes, then the key elements involved in storing wine are:

NO vibration: Try not to store wine on floorboards that move slightly, or under stairs that are wooden etc. Wine needs to rest to let all the elements in it to integrate and form nice long chains – these are extremely complex chemical processes but suffice it to say the longer the chain, generally the smoother the wine! Being constantly vibrated disturbs this process.
Vinous jet lag: Similarly when a wine is transported, these long chains literally break and take a while to re-combine. If possible give your wine a few weeks to recover from its journey.
No natural light: This really wrecks wine if exposed for too long (which is why so many bottles have dark glass). Wine left in the sun even for a few hours is generally a disaster. Electric light is OK but long-term exposure not yet proven to be harmless.
Temperature: Storage at 16 to 18 degrees is regarded as optimal and drinking them only marginally warmer is the go. Thus drinking reds at “room temperature” of 30 degrees in Sydney can wreck the taste – this is why we always suggest to chill your red slightly on a warmer day (and give it lots of air).
Temperature changes: Most people do not have proper cellars so the crucial thing is to have a temperature that changes very slowly over time. Thus storing your wine in a closed cardboard box is great as the box is an excellent insulator. Putting individual bottles in old (woollen) socks also works really well but your family may (quite unfairly!) think that that is REALLY odd! Putting your wine bottles on display in an open rack in a heated room or near a fridge may look good but really not recommended. On top of the fridge is perhaps the worst possible place in the house.
NEVER warm your wine in front of the fire – you will literally cook it and likely ruin it
Labels: If your storage is a bit damp (great for corks) or you want to keep your labels in pristine condition, wrap each bottle in gladwrap (who said wine collecting was odd!)

If like most people you are going to keep your wine for only a year or two, then basically all you need to do is keep it in the (closed) carton and stack that box in a cool, dark place on a concrete floor.

The 2002 Semillon comes from one of the grander estates in the Hunter that was established in the late eighties. They went slightly over the top, sparing no expense in growing quality grapes and once harvested, they planned that all their wine, including their semillon’s would be stored for a minimum of 10 years. Focusing only on “Museum Release” wines is an expensive process and ultimately let us purchase some absolute gems at outstanding prices. We have stored the 2002 for nearly three years to develop additional complexity, but it is still extraordinarily youthful and fresh, and will live for at least another decade if allowed to.

Hello,

On one day of the year the airwaves and student colleges resound to a large number of pranks and assertions that do, and should, defy all reason. They generally all end with a loud “April Fools” to the unfortunate recipient. While we are almost exactly a month late, over the last four weeks we have seen a number of wine related items that should certainly qualify for inclusion next year.

How about a French law enacted in 1954, and which still stands, stating that no flying saucers may fly over, take off from, or land on the vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape? The French are not renowned for their sense of humour or fun, and so, unsurprisingly, this law is not a joke but does actually exist.

Thirsty students, however, are a different story – recently a law student at Trinity College walked into an exam wearing a sword and demanded a glass of wine. Normally that would result in a long conversation with the police. However under the by-laws of the university, and only because he carried a sword, he had to be, and was, served a glass of wine. Sadly, this happened in Dublin, not Melbourne University.

Then there was the restaurant that told a friend making a phone booking that it charges $150 corkage per bottle. Unfortunately it was no Aprils Fool joke, so check carefully next time you want to BYO in the Napa Valley.

Finally, did you know that Beethoven, a noted drinker, probably went deaf due to the wine he drank? Sounds like an early April special, but at the time, the wine in Austria was so bad that lead was regularly added to wine to make it palatable – and Beethoven died with abnormally high lead levels. True story, so be careful if anyone offers you a bottle of very old Austrian wine!

There is no lead in any of our wine, and you do not need to be wearing a sword to get access to it! What our wines will do is save you a lot of money, whether dining at home, or restaurant (provided of course the corkage is not $150 a bottle!).

For centuries the beautiful Piedmont area of Italy has grown a grape so hard to get right that it is known locally as Arneis, or “little rascal”. After almost totally disappearing, this wine is now undergoing a resurgence in popularity in both Italy (described recently as “the most fashionable white in Italy”) and in America, where a well-known wine critic called it “a sublime and sophisticated alternative to the simpler, less complex Pinot Grigio's.” Perhaps this rascal is worth trying!

A number of vineyards in Australia grow it, and one the first and best was Dromana Estate on the equally beautiful Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. Unfortunately they collapsed last year, and out of the wreckage we were able to get a small parcel of their 2010 Arneis – from a top year, this is well worth trying, particularly when at only $13 a bottle it is so far under last years RRP of $22.

We are also able to release fresh supplies of another lovely riesling from the outstanding 2012 vintage in the Eden Valley, the organically grown Temple Bruer. Finally we re-release the Dame Nellie Melba of wines, the 2012 Higginbotham “Kari Bay” 2012 shiraz – we have now run out of it twice, with the supplier telling us each time it has all gone. Maybe it is simply third time lucky as last week we were offered yet another pallet of it. Perhaps just a slow boat back from Europe! Anyway we have this soft, easy drinking shiraz available again at only $10 a bottle.

Dromana Estate 2010 Mornington Peninsula " i " Arneis

The now extinct Dromana Estate produced this delicious and sophisticated, very Italian, gem. With lovely fresh aromas of ripe fruit, particularly pear, it is quite full in the mouth, with nice citrus freshness balancing the ripe pear and fleshy, supple grape flavours. With a long, clean finish, this is a distinctly European white, and represents excellent drinking on the last of our warmer days. At only $13 a bottle it is also outstanding value.

Last week we released, and in a few hours ran out of, a very good pinot for $14 from Salitage when Cracka Wines had previously had it for sale at $19.99. With the cooler weather on the way we now turn to cabernet, and are releasing the 2010 Alkoomi cabernet for only $13 – and this week we get our jollies from seeing it at Dan Murphy’s at $22! Smooth and supple with a lovely, dry (cabernet) finish, this is a serious bargain.

About five years ago James Halliday picked the obscure Fonty’s Pool as a “dark horse” and a vineyard to watch. Last year he gave it the maximum of 5 stars and listed it in his “top 100” wineries – looks like the dark horse came in! Certainly their wine, grown at Fonty’s Pool Farm in Pemberton, WA, and made via a JV with the famous Cape Mentelle winery, is excellent drinking – and now is very affordable thanks to a cancelled export order to China. This week we release their 2010 shiraz, a rich, smooth and deliciously soft red and a real bargain at only $12 a bottle.

This week we also release a pinot noir from Burgundy, the home of the greatest pinot’s in the world. Ours comes from the Blason de Bourgogne which is a cooperative of hundreds of small growers in Burgundy and they certainly know a thing or two about pinot noir. While this pinot is by no means a “grand Cru” this smooth and gently dry wine is an excellent and affordable way to drink a genuine “Burgundy”!

From an excellent vintage, this pinot has a lovely deep ruby colour, with quite rich aromas of red berries plus touches of the classic mushroom nuances. Lighter to medium bodied, it is smooth and supple with nice red-fruit flavours balanced by gentle, almost chalky (European) tannins. With a long, relatively dry finish this is a really nice pinot, but it is very different to the softer (and often sweet) Australian versions available at this price point. The Chinese market is the great hope of Australian wineries and a lot of our wine is making its way up there. Unfortunately quite a lot of it is also coming back! This is not because the wine is poor, but because the dollar is strong and competition is fierce. Thus there was no “Kung Hei Fat Choy” ** for the unfortunate Fonty’s Pool vineyard, whose quality reds that were meant to go to Guangzhou ended up back in Australia. They are a joint venture between Cape Mentelle (who make the wines) and Fonty’s Pool Farms and are a James Halliday “Top 100” and 5 star rated winery - their wines are pretty handy! We have grabbed quite a lot of red from this cancelled order and this week we release a rich and smooth merlot that is exceptional value at only $11 a bottle.

Imaginary Chateau’s and Corporate Collapses

It is indeed a strange world, when the marketing gurus invent a non-existent Chateau at the same time as real vineyards are closing all around us. Last year we had some “Chateau Hoffman” shiraz which sold out pretty quickly – perhaps the easy drinking shiraz with the fancy name appealed to the famous “label drinker”! In fact there is no such Chateau in the Barossa – it was purely a figment of the imagination and as we said last year, it is a bit of fun uncovering such furphies! In any event, we just got a little bit more of the “Chateau Hoffman”, which is in fact a heavily disguised red from Peter Lehmann that is a delicious, easy drinking Barossa shiraz, and at only $13 a bottle there is no premium for the fancy moniker!

Back to the real world, this week we have a beauty from Dromana Estate, which is yet another winery group recently liquidated by the corporate undertakers (aka the Receivers). This was really sad as Dromana were doing lots of interesting things with Italian grape varieties such as Pinot Grigio and Arneis. Certainly their packaging was very smart but it did not do them much good on the shelves! However Mornington is one of the up and coming wine regions, 2010 was an outstanding year and their Pinot Grigio is excellent drinking, particularly at only $13 a bottle.

We have also secured a bit more of the creamy smooth Makaraka 2012 Reserve Pinot Noir from Chile while our Bargain of the Week is an excellent white blend from Marienberg, another recently collapsed icon, at the remarkable price of only $9 a bottle.

We do tend to agree with all those who regard the 14^th as only an excuse for peddling roses, chocolates and assorted wares. However it is also an opportunity to indulge in a drop of sparkling with the one closest to you. To assist in this noble cause we have reduced the price of what we think is a terrific alternative to French “champagne”. Our delicious Cremant Brut (ie dry) is also from France, and it is made under the same regulations as expensive “champagne” but it is substantially cheaper. Goes well with expensive chocolate!

We also release a fresh young chardonnay from Blue Pyrenees which is ideal for this late-summer heat as well as another genuine bargain arising from the collapse of the famous Basedow winery. This week it is a 5 year old cabernet from the McLaren that while showing nice, gentle tannins, it is in a softer, richer style than traditional cabernets. Finally we have as our weekly Bargain a really easy drinking 5 year old shiraz from some of the oldest vineyards previously owned by Rothbury – at $7.50 a bottle it is exceptional value.

Apart from “things romantic”, the other thing to think about at this time of year is that red wine will generally taste awful if it is served at “room temperature” when it is 30 plus degrees outside – the ideal temperature for red is about 20 degrees, so if it is a hot day stick your red in the fridge for at least 20 minutes after you have opened it. The difference is dramatic.

Blason de Bourgogne Cremant de Bourgogne NV "Reserve" Brut

Reduced to only $24 a bottle to help you celebrate Valentine's Day, this is a terrific alternative to French champagne - it is a smooth, soft and lighter style with nice gentle acidity and is quite dry. From Burgundy, and made in exactly the same way as Champagne, this is a serious and lovely alternative to it, and it is substantially cheaper, particularly at this weeks special price of only $24 a bottle.

Basedow McLaren Vale 2009 "White Label" Cabernet Sauvignon

Another excellent and well-priced red secured from the collapse of the iconic Basedow winery. From a very good vintage year, and showing excellent ripe fruit, this supple and creamy-smooth red has lovely soft, fine grained tannins to finish. A softer style of cabernet, this is delicious and worth a lot more than the $12 we can offer it for. Do try and let it rest a while before opening it, and also try and drink it at a temperature of around 20 degrees.

This smooth, supple and crisp young white comes from one of Australia's very first "cool climate" sites established over 50 years ago. Originally owned by Remy Martin (owners of Krug etc etc) Chateau Remy is now known as Blue Pyrenees. This wine shows almost no oak but loads of lovely pure fruit acid and finishing fresh and crisp. Delicious, refreshing young wine perfect for the hot weather and a bargain at only $12.

Grown in a superb vintage year, this lighter bodied, smooth and softer style of red is a real bargain at only $7.50. This well-made wine comes from one of the old Rothbury vineyards in the Broke - Fordwich sub-region of the Hunter Valley. With touches of spice and warmth on the nose, this is smooth, quite fresh and has a good balance of flavours, tannin and fresh soft acid. Do not let the bargain price put you off - this is an excellent, easy drinking red.

Another bargain from Ursula

After establishing her vineyard in 1966, and being the first female winemaker in Australia, it is very sad that Ursula Pridhams creation was finally sold up by the Receivers last year. Nothing to do with Ursula, as she sold it all in 1999 – the collapse is due once again to the current issues and problems in the wine industry. We have managed to pick up some real bargains from the wreckage and this week we release the second of them. It is a smooth and crisp young white from the outstanding 2012 McLaren Vale vintage and at just $10 a bottle, it is terrific for hot-weather drinking, particularly as it only has 11.5% alcohol.

We also have obtained more stocks of the beautiful 2011 “Bordeaux Blend” from Briarose in the Margaret River and can thus offer it at the new and lower price of only $16 a bottle. Finally, we have two weekly bargains for you, both chardonnays – the nicely rich and smooth Mornington Estate 2010 Chardonnay now only $13 a bottle and the clean and delicious 2009 Basedow Chardonnay now only $8 a bottle for this week, or one third of its RRP.

The year of the horse is probably more appealing than last years snake, with people born in “horse years” being likely to talk too much, to be cheerful and popular, and they love to be in the centre of a crowd. Sounds like our ideal customer! **

This week we release the Marienberg 2009 shiraz, an excellent, bigger style of red from the McLaren which we secured from yet another corporate wreck. We also have received fresh stocks of one of our most popular wines, the Whistling Duck cabernet and this week we have as our “Bargain of the Week” an excellent 2009 Hunter chardonnay. Finally, do try our Gomersal 2012 riesling and see for yourself why 2012 is regarded as the best year for rieslings in a generation – and it would be perfect for that Chinese meal!

Ursula Pridham was the first female wine maker in Australia and she was a real trail-blazer. Thus in 1976 the Age announced “Pridham sets another first” when she was the first and only woman invited to a long established wine tasting and judging event in Melbourne. She established her vineyard in 1966 and she made some excellent even if somewhat individualistic wines through the seventies and eighties. In 1991 she retired, selling her vineyard, and over the next decade some top-class wines were produced. Unfortunately the vineyard got caught up in the wine world’s corporate shufflings and financial turmoil and was finally sold up by the Receivers in 2013. We have managed to pick up some real bargains from the wreckage and this is the first of them. Unfortunately there was not a lot of this particular wine available but it is outstanding.

With the continuing heat, do try and chill your reds before drinking them – the ideal temperature to drink them is up to 20 degrees (and not “room temperature” up near 40 degrees!). They will taste dramatically better if you open them and then put them in the fridge for 20 or more minutes before trying them.

** People born in 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002 and 2014 come under the Year of the Horse according to the Chinese horoscope, with 2014 being a wooden horse as distinct from metal etc. According to the Chinese, “Wood Horses are strong and stable and have a better ability to make decisions. Excellent at interacting with others, they are successful personally and professionally.” Maybe the Trojans were right, and wooden horses are the go !

Marienberg McLaren Vale 2009 "Reserve" Shiraz

From a great year in arguably the best region for shiraz in Australia, this is a serious and powerful wine. An excellent deep, inky-black in colour, it is big and warm, showing lovely dark fruit flavours overlaid with dark chocolate and spice. Importantly it shows none of the “jamminess” that big wines out of the McLaren often have. Warm and smooth, with gently drying tannins nicely balanced by the fruit acid, It finishes long and gently dry. Definitely one for those who look for the bigger, old style of shiraz. Limited stock.

Whistling Duck Hilltops (NSW) 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon

Grown by the iconic Len Evans Family wine group in the cool climate hills of the Hilltops region of NSW (near Young) this cabernet was targeted at the export and the English restaurant market. However this wine is another casualty of the strong Aussie dollar and we have just picked up what is likely to be the last of it. Deeply coloured, it is medium bodied and supple with soft, ripe fruit and nice acid balanced by the fine-grained tannins. The Crusades come to the Eden Valley!

There must be something in the water in the wine regions around Adelaide. Last year, for example, we had the fun of discovering “Skyworld, Earthworld and Underworld” of the ancient Celts in the Clare, and also finding an imaginary chateau in the Barossa (Chateau Hoffman, of Peter Lehmann Wines). This year we got an early result, finding a vigneron who claims a link back to the Crusades and who named our new 2012 Eden Valley riesling accordingly. This week we also have a delicious, slightly lighter style of shiraz from Pirramimma and following a new delivery, we can offer a bargain price on a favourite 2012 shiraz from the Adelaide Hills, the Kari Bay.

David Bruer runs a couple of small vineyards in Langhorne Creek and the Eden Valley called “Temple Bruer” after a relic of a Knights Templar building in Lincolnshire of the same name. These were the guys who caused a lot of havoc in the Middle East some 900 years ago - the peaceful hills of the Eden Valley certainly seem a long way from the carnage of the Crusades. Perhaps this somewhat evocative name is one reason why we can offer his wines at such a bargain price! In any event, the Eden Valley certainly produce excellent rieslings in years such as 2012, regarded as the best in a generation and this week we release a fine one from David to complement the two shiraz’s. Kari Bay Adelaide Hills (SA) 2012 Shiraz

Professor Hickinbotham was one of the founding fathers of Australian wine and the grandfather of David Hickinbotham, who made this wine. The family still own some of the best vineyards in South Australia, and the grapes they produce are good enough to have supplied fruit for Penfolds Grange. Kari Bay, their export label wine, is certainly not Grange, but it is both affordable and good drinking. Grown in what is now widely called the best vintage in a generation this smooth and uncomplicated young wine is already excellent, easy drinking. With a bit of spice and cherry on the nose, it has good balance, nice ripe fruit and a gently drying finish. A real bargain at only $9, thanks to one more yet another English export order being cancelled.

This week we release another of the outstanding aged whites from Chris Hill – the 2006 and the 2000 are both sold out but the 2004 is an excellent replacement – fresh, smooth and beautifully light (with only 11% alcohol) it is ideal drinking in this heat. Also from the Hunter we have a gently rich 5 year old chardonnay for only $9 plus a smooth and warm shiraz also produced by Chris Hill and from the McLaren, reduced this week to only $10.

Thanks to PriceWaterhouseCoopers (an accounting firm known widely and somewhat scurrilously as “Poopers”!) rather expeditiously liquidating all the bottled stock of the latest wine group collapse, we have secured some real bargains, and this week we are releasing two of them.

Once Basedow was one of the most famous names in Australian wine – their winery was one of the oldest, being established by Johannes Basedow in 1896 while Martin Basedow established the Roseworthy Agricultural College. When Doug Lehmann was the boss he developed the famous Basedow “White Burgundy” (ie semillon) brand – and 20 years ago it was the most awarded white wine in Australia. Basedows was combined with Peter Lehmann wines in 1990 and since then it has changed hands numerous times, and most recently it has been caught up in yet another corporate collapse. All very sad for such an iconic brand.

As wine drinkers however, these corporate shenanigans do have one benefit, which is access to these iconic wines at remarkable prices. The first two Basedow wines we are releasing are a semillon blend and a shiraz, both at around half their retail value. We have also secured more stocks of the delicious Pirramimma 2012 riesling – last year was a superb year for rieslings, and they are disappearing quickly so if you like this variety now is the time to move. It’s not all it’s Cracked up to be! $23 v $16!

In fact it is a lot less than it is “Cracked” up to be. We have got a fresh shipment of the very nice Blue Pyrenees 2009 bubbly and can offer it at only $16 a bottle – this is substantially less than discount groups such as CrackaWines.com who currently have it for sale at $23. Makaraka Chile 2012 "Reserve" Pinot Noir

A smooth and beautifully rich, almost creamy pinot from Chile. Grown in the beautiful Central Valley region of Chile, this wine has an excellent and clear but dark ruby colour, with a lovely fresh aroma combining ripe red fruit with a touch of cassis and spice. Welcome to the club, Orange

No, we are not talking about the Orangemen, the Protestant organisation founded in Belfast in 1796. This is the group that continue to irritate Catholics as they celebrate the victory of King William of Orange over James II at the Battle of the Boyne over 300 years ago. Talk about long memories – however no politics in this email!

We are in fact referring to the picturesque town of Orange, 3 hours drive west of Sydney. It is a bit of a surprise that Orange is regarded as one of the three best regions in Australia for growing sauvignon blanc. Thus James Halliday states that " they produce some of Australia’s best sauvignon blanc, wines with real structure and authority. Two regions, the Adelaide Hills and Margaret River stood in front of all others until recently joined by Orange." While this particular wine is unlikely to win a trophy, our $8 “Bargain of the Week” is delicious and well-made, and no sign of any “Troubles’ in this bottle!

We recently released a rosé from Hawkes Bay and one from the Barossa. With the return of cold and rain to many areas it seems that we may have been a bit premature in believing that summer had arrived for good. This week we thus release some nice, warming shirazs that will tide you over until the weather starts behaving itself – both are at a 50% discount to their RRP and at these prices will certainly help off-set the soaring price of heating.

After the “cheap and cheery” wines of last week, this week we have a couple of more serious ones. We have managed to get our hands on a small parcel of a lovely mature wine from Coonawarra – the 1999 Balnaves Cab-Merlot has been perfectly stored at the winery since bottling and this smooth, rich wine is a beauty and ready to drink. With flavours of blackberry and chocolate and a long, gently drying finish, at $24 it is cheaper than what Dan Murphy's is selling the 2009 vintage for.

Our 2012 Clare riesling has now sold out but we have an excellent replacement from the Eden Valley, long regarded as the leading area in Australia for that variety.

If you like older wines, but have never had a cellar or a place to store them, there are a number of mature beauties on our website – for example the Virgin Hills 2005 cabernet, the 2005 Oceans Estate cab-merlot, the Chris Hill 2005 GSM and the Geoff Merrill 2006 chardonnay are all excellent wines and drinking beautifully. If you have a problem with any of these wines, then as always we stand ready to replace them so why not give them a go and impress your friends !

Balnaves Cab-Merlot

Balnaves 1999 Coonawarra (SA) Cabernet Merlot

Balnaves is rated a 5 star winery by Halliday, and has been for over a decade while its $100+ flagship cabernet is regarded as one of the great Coonawarra wines. This cab-merlot shows why this family owned winery is so highly rated. With the 2009 version for sale at Dan Murphy's for $28 this 14 year old wine is also great value at $24.

Perfectly cellared at the vineyard since bottling this is a lovely, fully mature wine. From an outstanding year, it is deep red in colour and shows aromas of blackberries and a hint of chocolate. It is medium bodied with a lovely balance of fruit sweetness and fresh acidity. Supple and smooth, it has delicious rich flavours of dark plum and a touch of chocolate balanced by still fresh acid and fine grained tannins that lead to a long, gently drying finish. This wine should be decanted to show everything it has - it is a beauty ! LIMITED

What contemptible scoundrel stole the cork from my lunch?

With holidays almost here, its time to think of a lazy lunch or two, and with apologies to WC Fields, we have a couple of specials that would be ideal. This week we have reduced the price of the 2009 Salitage Classic White to only $8 as well as the Ashford Grove Merlot from Victoria to only $6.50 a bottle. In addition we have the crisp and smooth Hope Estate “Yengo” chardonnay from one of the greatest vintages in the hunter in many years at only $10 a bottle.

There are a lot of other bargains on our website – for example the Marquis Philips 2008 Grenache at only $10 and the 2008 Chris Hill Barossa shiraz at $12 are terrific value and while they will keep for some years yet they are smooth and delicious right now.

With the heat back again, do try and chill your reds before opening them – the ideal temperature to drink them is around 20 degrees and they will taste dramatically better if you open them and then put them in the fridge for 15 or 20 minutes before trying them.

Christmas comes early via the Observer newspaper!

Late last year the Observer newspaper in England rated our 2010 Olive Branch McLaren Vale red as one of the “The 20 best red wines for Christmas” and it was priced at 12 Pounds. You can now try what the Poms were drinking last Christmas for only $12 ! The other wine also has a European connection – the Belgian owners of Pipers Brook planted a vineyard in 2000 in South Australia to service the European market. However with the strong A$ and Europe struggling, the Norfolk Rise wines are now starting to appear in Australia – this sauvignon blanc at only $9 is great value and its quality reflects the Pipers Brook connection.

Easter is suddenly here (Good Friday is next week !) , so now may be a good time to stock-up whether you are planning to entertain at home or are going away – it is very easy and convenient to order the wines of your choice and then we can ship them either to your home or to your holiday destination so they are waiting for you when you arrive.

Willunga 100 “Olive Branch” 2010 Shiraz Cabernet

McLaren Vale (SA) $12.00

Willunga was started 8 years ago by an English Master of Wine who saw a gap in the UK between the top flight Aussie wines and the cheaper, often very ordinary cheaper ones. With the former MD of Wirra Wirra now involved, they have been enormously successful. Thus this wine, for example, was in the Observer newspaper's "20 best red wines for Christmas" a few months ago with a price of 12 Pounds at Tesco supermarkets. At only $12 this is great value back here !

Described by the Observer as "a serious wine", it is very deeply coloured with dark fruits and the classic McLaren Vale "touch of tar" on the nose. This follows through on the palate, where this medium bodied wine shows ripe, smooth fruit, a touch of the famous "tar" and gentle wood tannins balanced nicely with fresh acid. The Observer is right - it is serious but is also very satisfying drinking and will be for the next 3 or 4 years.

Norfolk Rise 2010 Sauv Blanc

Norfolk Rise Mt Benson (SA) 2010 Sauvignon Blanc $9.00

Despite having the same owners as the famous Pipers Brook of Tasmania, this vineyard has a very low profile in Australia. Its owners, a 200 year old Belgian trading house, established this vineyard in 2000 with production targeted at Europe. However with continuing economic woes in Europe combined with the strong Aussie dollar, some is now appearing in Australia at very reasonable prices. Rated at 91 out of 100 points by James Halliday and available at a few of the big discounters at $14.45, this is great value at $9.

Light straw-gold in colour, it has a nice fresh aroma with a hint of gooseberry. It is quite light in the mouth, with fresh citrus flavours with a touch of that gooseberry - fresh, easy and delicious drinking over the next 12 months.

We have had a lot of fun, and had a fantastic year, with sales and new customer numbers going on the proverbial J curve over the last four months. 2012 McLaren Vale Riesling

A very affordable and delicious Riesling from a top maker from what some commentators are calling the best vintage in decades. Grape yields were however well down so prices like this are unlikely to remain. This wine has lovely soft fruit balanced by a light citrus tang and is perfect for this summer but will thrive for at least more two years.

Clare Estate Riesling

“Defender of the Faith” Clare Valley 2012

A very affordable and delicious Riesling from one of the best regions in Australia for this variety. It was also grown in what some commentators are already calling one of the greatest vintages in Clare in living memory. Grape yields in Clare were however reduced by up to 80 so this wine is exceptionally priced. This wine has beautiful fresh fruit balanced by lemony acid that will soften and age beautifully – however this is wonderful, fresh drinking right now and is perfect for this summer.

Drinking well at the beach

Barossa Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre 2005

We have just secured the last stocks, at a good price, of this brother of the famous “basket press” shiraz and thus the discount. This wine has a lovely deep ruby/plum colour and in the mouth is smooth, rich and medium bodied. With a distinctive flavor due to the Grenache, it has beautiful balance with hints of spice and chocolate and finishes very long with soft drying tannins. A serious and delicious wine. Two Eights Dominic Portet Pyrenees

VIC Shiraz 2004 - Now reduced to only $7 a bottle

Made by well known wine maker Dominic Portet of Taltarni Wines fame, this is a powerful, dry, old-fashioned red from the Pyrenees region of Victoria that is fully mature and ready to drink. Lovely scented flavour with great fruit and drying tannins but not long on the finish. Not for you unless you love big, old style dry reds, but this is excellent of its style particularly at this price. Does need lots of air when first opened. (NB : cork closure).

In this case, when the matriarch of Coombe Farm died last year, it seems that the accountants got the opportunity to reduce stock levels and thus we have a really lovely 2004 red from this famous estate available now at a real bargain price. This is a beautiful, fully mature wine that represents excellent value. Pamela, Lady Vestey (Dame Nellie Melba’s granddaughter) lived at Coombe Farm up to when she died last year. It seems that the accountants then got busy, as we have managed to pick up some of this lovely wine at a remarkable price. With the current release (the 2008) selling for up to $33, at only $14 a bottle this wine is real value. Capricornia 2008 McLaren Vale shiraz

As the liquidators for one of the more spectacular winery collapses, we can only thank these corporate undertakers for dumping this weeks red wine offering so precipitously. The white also comes from a troubled winery, but the circumstances are not quite as dramatic. They both represent outstanding value and, more importantly, are delicious drinking.

2012 Marquis Philips 2008 McLaren Vale Grenache: $10 each

A serious bargain arising from the collapse of a major wine exporter to the USA, this wine was dumped by PWC with no regard to its quality. It is delicious, being rich, warm and smooth with huge, creamy fruit balanced by gentle, supple tannins. If you like Cotes-du-Rhone and Chateauneuf-du-Pape reds (the better ones are generally made from at least 75% grenache) you should love this. This winery was described a few years ago by Robert Parker (arguably the world’s most influential wine critic) as providing the best value wines in the world, It is different to the standard shiraz’s from this region, but it is delicious and at this liquidation price, less than half its American price, it really is worth trying. Also do read the extended notes on the website – it is quite a story !

Chris Hill 2006 “Unearthed” Hunter Valley Chardonnay: $10 each

Again dumped, this time by a creditor, this delicious lighter bodied white has a brilliant yellow gold colour, and shows good richness balanced by fresh and lemony acid. The oak is very subtle and the end product is smooth and really enjoyable. (NB Cork closure). Halliday rated these wines as 9/10 in 2011 and noted they retail for $45 per bottle so at $10 they are a steal.

Very deep purple in colour, this wine from a premium area and a top year has a sweet, soft fruit aroma. It is delicious in the mouth - soft and balanced, with some spice and gentle drying tannin. We have however managed to secure a very small parcel of its younger brother from the 10 out of 10 vintage of 2004. As it is in such tight supply we are not putting it on the web – if you would like some just “reply’ to this email and we will do the rest.

This wine will live for years but is delicious drinking now – medium bodied, supple and smooth with lovely, soft fruit acid balanced by very gentle tannins. The current release is on the winery website at $45 a bottle so this wine is not just delicious, it is a real bargain. (12.5% alcohol, drink now to 2016)

Chris Hill "Reserve" Barossa Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre 2005
