Thanks Poopers, much appreciated!

Thanks to PriceWaterhouseCoopers (an accounting firm known widely and somewhat scurrilously as “Poopers”!) rather expeditiously liquidating all the bottled stock of the latest wine group collapse, we have secured some real bargains, and this week we are releasing two of them.

Once Basedow was one of the most famous names in Australian wine – their winery was one of the oldest, being established by Johannes Basedow in 1896 while Martin Basedow established the Roseworthy Agricultural College. When Doug Lehmann was the boss he developed the famous Basedow “White Burgundy” (ie semillon) brand  – and 20 years ago it was the most awarded white wine in Australia. Basedows was combined with Peter Lehmann wines in 1990 and since then it has changed hands numerous times, and most recently it has been caught up in yet another corporate collapse. All very sad for such an iconic brand.

As wine drinkers however, these corporate shenanigans do have one benefit, which is access to these iconic wines at remarkable prices. The first two Basedow wines we are releasing are a semillon blend and a shiraz, both at around half their retail value. We have also secured more stocks of the delicious Pirramimma 2012 riesling – last year was a superb year for rieslings, and they are disappearing quickly so if you like this variety now is the time to move. Finally our Bargain of the Week, the fresh and clean sauv blanc from Norfolk Rise is ideal for summer drinking. With Wine Selectors having the 2012 sale at $14.45, our price of $11 is a genuine bargain.

Christmas is only 20 sleeps away!

If running short of gift ideas, a six pack is easy and affordable and generally well appreciated! We can also write a card to go with the wine. If going away why not organise for some delicious wine to be waiting for you when you arrive for your holiday?

Basedow Wines Barossa Valley (SA) 2009 “Oscars Favourite” Semillon Chardonnay

52% off RRP of $23.00

Thanks to the receivers to Basedow, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, quickly dumping their bottled stock, we have this fresh and delicious semillon blend available for a bargain $11 a bottle. Light and smooth, with a hint of richness, and finishing with a citrus tang, this is refreshing and delicious summer drinking. Basedows put Barossa semillon on the map 30 years ago and all that track-record shows in this bargain priced summer special.

Basedows 2010 "White Label" Barossa Valley Shiraz

50% off RRP of $24.00

As with the semillon blend, the dumping of the Basedow bottled stocks means that this iconic and delicious Barossa shiraz is available for a seriously cheap $12 a bottle. From an excellent vintage year, this invitingly warm and supple shiraz is beautifully balanced by very gentle tannins at the finish. This is really nice and it is worth a lot more than the $12 we can offer it for. Do try and let it rest a while before opening it, and also in these warmer months try and drink it at a temperature of around 20 degrees.

Pirramimma McLaren Vale (SA) 2012 "Old Vine" Eight Carat Riesling

45% off RRP of $22.00

With delicious soft fruit overlaid with a light citrus tang, it is good news that we have secured a little more of this Riesling from what is arguably the best white vintage in decades. It has a lovely softness balanced by a light citrus tang that has already softened, showing the sweet fruit underneath. This is perfect drinking now but will thrive for at least two more years. At only $12 a bottle this is excellent value.
