The Barossa Valley, along with McLaren Vale, are two of the best regions in Australia for growing grenache, and in outstanding vintage years like 2012 the results are terrific, particularly when the grapes come from a single vineyard owned by one of the most established growers in the district. With substantial new capital provided by a Chinese investor, this label is one to watch. We ran out of this wine some time ago, but recently managed to get the very last stocks of this well priced wine. With the typical pale cherry and brick colour of this variety, it has a lovely ripe and rich, almost floral, aroma. This strong, medium bodied red really is satisfying drinking, with very different flavours to the standard shiraz and cabernets produced in the Barossa. Smooth and rich, it shows touches of spice and cinnamon, even elements of rose-hip. It finishes gently long with no evident tannins – this is a very nice, and richly satisfying red - It is also great value at only $14, with groups such as Wine Selectors recently offering this label at $18.50 per bottle.
