Quick Overview

Previously for sale at $40 in the now closed cellar door, this lean, strong and supple red shows lovely (cool climate) freshness highlighted by an attractive richness enhanced by savoury and spicy characters. From a top region and a classic vintage, it finishes long and gently dry and warm. Great drinking and even better value at half price. (NB : cork closure)

Box Stallion was one of the best vineyards in the highly regarded Mornington Peninsula wine region. However, and along with a number of other high-profile names on the peninsula, in 2013 it went broke which was a real shame as their wines in great years such as 2012 were very good indeed. We picked up their tempranillo’s from the 2010 and 2012 vintages (both excellent on the Peninsular) and let them rest after they were shuffled in and out of various warehouses. The 2010 has just sold out so now we can release their 2012 which has softened nicely and is ready to drink. When this cool climate region experiences a “best in a decade” vintage such as 2012, which allows grapes such as shiraz and tempranillo to ripen properly, then the results are really worth trying. Previously for sale at the vineyard for $40, this wine has a bright, deep ruby colour and shows fresh, almost floral, but nicely soft and rich aromas overlaid with a touch of spice. Medium to lighter bodied (the classic tempranillo description of “lean” also applies here) it is highlighted by lovely, fresh, almost tangy acid overlaid with savoury and spice characters and an attractive richness. With a long gently dry finish holding all these elements together, this lean, strong but deliciously fresh and complex wine is very enjoyable drinking. (NB : cork closure)
