Beringer is one of the most iconic names in American wine, with (for example) their Private Reserve cabernet being described just this week by Wine Searcher as “one of America's most highly regarded Cabernets” and the current (2012) vintage is for sale today at up to US$150 a bottle. Robert Parker (arguably the worlds most influential wine critic) wrote that “the group of Beringer's 2012 reds is one of the strongest I have tasted”. Beringer is now owned by Treasury (aka Penfolds) and when we were offered some of their 2012 Napa Valley Merlot we grabbed it. It had been bottled in the States for export to England and somehow it arrived in Australia. Not sure if the marketing guru responsible for all that is still employed, but the wine itself has travelled well and the price was compelling. This wine is from their “Founders Estate” range (certainly not the “Private Reserve”) and thus we can offer it significantly under US$150 a bottle ! With a very deep maroon colour, it has lovely fresh aromas of black fruits and plum. Quite full bodied, it is smooth and supple, with a very appealing softness balanced up by slowly emerging and very gentle tannins. With lots of fresh acidity it finishes long and clean - this is good drinking and great value at $18 a bottle. (NB : cork closure, as with most American wine)
