Quick Overview

Smooth and rich, with lovely soft fruit balanced by gently drying, almost chalky tannins (think Italian reds) this is a really nice, aromatic merlot from a brilliant Kiwi vintage. Do try and give it a bit of air so it can open up properly. Great value at just $12 a bottle.

This is the first Merlot we have managed to secure from Monowai and it is from the “once in a generation” 2013 vintage. This rich, smooth red is produced by the Lowe family from 22 hectares of vines on the banks of the Ngaruroro River in Crownthorpe, a cooler, higher altitude district of Hawke's Bay. Deeply coloured, with big blackberry and plum aromas, this quite full bodied wine is soft and rich with gentle, almost chalky Italian-style tannins emerging to balance it all. With its big, enticing aromas and its soft and gently dry palate, this is simply delicious. Great drinking, particularly at just $12 a bottle. It does need some air to really open up.
