This is a classic McLaren Vale shiraz. From a terrific vintage, and a producer famous for exactly this style, this wine is rich and warm and is everything you could want from a McLaren red. James Halliday confirmed its quality when he gave it a very high 95 points. Pirramimma, which is aboriginal for “the moon and the stars”, was first planted in 1892 by Alexander Johnson and his grandson is now in charge. Located south east of the township of McLaren Vale (about 40 km south of Adelaide) Pirramimma is famous for its reds, and this wine, made from grapes grown in some of its best and oldest vineyards (including the 45-year-old Katunga block) is a beauty. They added a tiny proportion of the white grape, viognier, to add both freshness and lift the aromas, which has worked well. It is inky black in colour, and has a deep, fragrant aroma of ripe fruit and spice and a touch of the famous McLaren “tar”. This strong, full-bodied wine is soft, rich and smooth, with lovely clean acid balancing the huge fruit. With touches of spice and chocolate, it is all held together by fine-grained, gently drying tannins. Wonderful drinking now this wine will live for years. VERY LIMITED
