Quick Overview

Another excellent, easy drinking italian, this time from Sicily. It has ripe, soft fruit as well as that typical, bright Italian freshness overlaid with a slightly savoury flavour. Lighter bodied, this is excellent, easy drinking that reflects the warmth of Sicily just as our shiraz’s do locally.

Details

Avola is a small town in the far south of Sicily and this "Black of Avola" grape is in some ways similar to our shiraz. It is the most important red wine grape grown in the warm island of Sicily and for years it was used (illegally) to improve the often thin wines of France. The Sensi family have been making wine in Italy since 1890 from their original base in Tuscany. They now also own the fifteenth century Villa Calappiano property and vineyards. The “Sensi Collezione” label is used for their better quality export wines (and thus the "IGT" regional certification of the quality level) and this delicious red is one of them. Fortunately the importer found 20 cases in her warehouse so we have now brought this excellent red back on the list. While it will keep for years, this wine is ready to drink now. A deep plum in colour, it shows ripe, soft fruit as well as that typical bright Italian acid overlaid with a slightly savoury, very Italian, flavour finishing with that typical, soft (almost chalky) Italian tannin. Lighter bodied, this is excellent, easy drinking that reflects the warmth of Sicily just as our shiraz’s do locally. (note that bottle photo is of the 2011)
