Details

Once Basedow was one of the most famous names in Australian wine – the winery was one of the oldest, being established by Johannes Basedow in 1896 while Martin Basedow established the Roseworthy Agricultural College. One of its more recent chiefs was Doug Lehmann, He developed the famous Basedow “White Burgundy” (ie semillon) – and 20 years ago it was the most awarded white in Australia. Basedows was combined with Peter Lehmann wines in 1990 and since then it has changed hands numerous times, and most recently it has been caught up in yet another corporate collapse, this time a vineyard and wine retailing group based in the Hunter. All very sad for such an iconic brand. As wine drinkers however, these corporate shenanigans do have one benefit, which is access to these iconic wines at remarkable prices. Thanks to PriceWaterhouseCoopers expeditiously (dare we say precipitously ? ! ) liquidating all of Basedows bottled stock, we have secured some real bargains, and this is one of them. A lovely pale green / gold, it has enticing, fresh aromas as well showing a touch of richness. Quite light bodied, it is very smooth and round, and finishes with a gentle citrus tang. This refreshing and delicious white is ideal summer drinking, particularly at the bargain price of only $12 a bottle. Basedows put Barossa semillon on the map 30 years ago and the pedigree shows in this nicely made wine.
