Quick Overview

Grown in the former Pooles Rock Estate, this soft, silky smooth white is wonderful with spicy food or as an aperitif. From a very good vintage at Pokolbin, it is a brilliant pale gold in colour and in the mouth it is soft and round with a delicious soft citrus edge at the end to clean it up. Great value at just $12 a bottle.

Details

Spring Mountain is the old Pooles Rock, a very well-known and highly regarded vineyard owned by David Clark, former chair of Macquarie Bank. With some of their Semillon still for sale, for example, at Dan Murphy’s at $35 a bottle, they obviously produced top-tier wines. After his death, Australian Gas Light purchased the vineyards as part of their push to get coal seam gas extraction into the valley. This was and is highly controversial, and one of the outcomes was that AGL have had trouble selling their wine. Thus the remarkable value for this and for some of their delicious semillons which have been releasing. AGL may be on the nose to many people, but their contractors still make excellent wine. This wine is an excellent example of this lesser known variety which does so well in the Hunter, particularly in good vintages like 2011 (which was surprisingly good in Pokolbin). It is a brilliant pale gold in colour, and has a typical fruit salad nose but with a softness redolent of ripe fruit. Soft and round in the mouth, it has a delicious soft citrus edge at the end to clean it up. Ready to drink, this is excellent with food, particularly spicy Asian dishes. Excellent value at just $12 a bottle.
