Once Basedow was one of the most famous names in Australian wine – the winery was one of the oldest, being established by Johannes Basedow in 1896 while Martin Basedow established the Roseworthy Agricultural College. One of its more recent chiefs was Doug Lehmann, He developed the famous Basedow “White Burgundy” (ie semillon) – and 20 years ago it was the most awarded white in Australia. Basedows was combined with Peter Lehmann wines in 1990 and since then it has changed hands numerous times, and most recently it has been caught up in yet another corporate collapse, this time a vineyard and wine retailing group based in the Hunter. All very sad for such an iconic brand. The liquidator quickly dumped this iconic wine and thus the remarkable prices. From a very good vintage year this wine is a brilliant pale gold in colour, and shows clean and fresh aromas of stonefruit. It is lighter to medium bodied, beautifully smooth with nice soft acid overlaid with a touch of richness. This is delicious wine, and previously retailing for $24, it is terrific value at just $11.
