Plantagent was planted in the 1960’s by Tony Smith, an Englishman who claimed that he was descended from the line of English kings known as the Plantagenets. Brand new to the wine industry, although well accustomed to the product, he was the first person to plant vines in a part of Mt Barker already known as Plantagenet Shire. If it was, as folk lore has it, the main reason he chose this area to plant his vines then he was indeed lucky - it turned out to be ideal for growing premium grapes and is now regarded as perhaps second only to Margaret River. Thirty years on, he sold out to a prominent WA family and while not one of the big names, it is a very highly regarded smaller producer who have excellent wine making skills as evidenced by their having a 5 star rating (the highest possible) from Halliday. Incidentally, the name “Hellfire Bay” comes from the nickname some of the first settlers gave to a local landing area. They thought they were sailing through the gates of hell as they watched the hitherto unknown St. Elmo’s fire light up the sky above them. As people were wont to do, they prayed for mercy and the name Hellfire Bay stuck. From a great vintage, and at optimal drinking over the next year, this English labelled wine shows a bright, pale gold colour with attractive aromas of white peaches. It is medium to lighter bodied, nicely smooth with soft fruit balanced by a gentle acidity. Good, uncomplicated drinking.
