This wine was produced by one of the pioneering Kiwi wine families (Petar Fredatovich planted his first vines in 1937 near Auckland, and his grandson now runs the company) and is fresh, crisp and totally refreshing. While Marlborough is better known for producing the ubiquitous sauv blanc, it also produces great examples of the other “cool climate” grape, which is Riesling. From a very good year, and a premier region, and with just 11.5% alcohol, this Riesling is really worth trying if you have never tried one from across the ditch. Very light, and with lots of fresh lime and lemon flavours, and showing a touch of minerality, this refreshing wine is ideal as an aperitif, or as a lunchtime wine with seafood. At the tasting, someone remarked that this wine reminded them of fruit tingles, and that it was just perfect with the prawns. Sounds an odd combination, but it was a perfect match ! Great value at $16 a bottle.
